The Rose
God, the Almighty and Most Merciful, says concerning the Last Day in Surah Ar-Rahman (The Most Merciful), verse 37:
{When the sky is torn apart and becomes like a rose – like molten grease.}
This verse is part of the eschatological descriptions in the Quran, evoking the cosmic upheavals that will precede the Day of Judgment. We will analyze this passage from multiple perspectives:
1. An apocalyptic and cosmic vision
2. The symbolism of the rose and molten grease
3. A scientific and spiritual interpretation
An Apocalyptic and Cosmic Vision:
In the Quran’s depiction of the end of times, powerful and striking images are used: the sky splitting apart—“When the sky is torn apart,” (Surah Al-Inshiqaq, verse 1)—the extinction of stars, and the collapse of mountains. Here, the splitting of the sky and its changing form suggest a radical transformation of the universe, symbolizing the end of the cosmic order as we know it.
This imagery is meant to awaken awareness among believers: the material world is destined to disappear, and only divine reality will remain.
The Symbolism of the Rose and Molten Grease:
The rose is a metaphor that conveys both beauty and fragility. Its shape can also suggest an explosion, an orderly rupture, an opening. Some interpret this as a poetic reference to the majesty of creation and the inevitable transformation of the universe.
As for molten grease, it evokes a substance in fusion, dissolving and deforming under extreme heat. This reinforces the idea of a cosmic upheaval, an unstable state where usual structures are destroyed.
The combination of these two images—“the beauty of the rose and the chaotic fluidity of molten grease”—creates a striking contrast, reflecting both the harmony of creation and its eventual disintegration.
A Scientific and Spiritual Interpretation:
Some contemporary commentators have linked this verse to discoveries in astronomy. The image of the “rose” brings to mind certain nebulae observed by the Hubble telescope, such as the Rosette Nebula, which appears to depict a sky split apart into a floral shape. Others see in the molten grease a reference to the state of matter under extreme heat, similar to the transformation of stars at the end of their life cycle.
Verse 55:37 of Surah Ar-Rahman is a powerful evocation of the end times, using vivid imagery to describe a cosmic upheaval. The metaphor of the rose and molten grease illustrates both beauty and destruction, highlighting the duality of divine creation and the inevitable transformation of the universe.
At the end of time, the sky will take on the color and form of a rose. The spiral arrangement of petals reflects the swirling motion that will agitate the entire celestial mass. This same rotational movement is observed in boiling liquids and is particularly visible in highly heated fats.
Thus, this verse invites us to contemplate the greatness of God, the transience of our material existence, and the necessity of preparing for the Day of Judgment by strengthening our faith and performing righteous deeds.
