The Resurrection

 The Resurrection

"God gives us examples of His power to resurrect us after our death, for those whose skepticism outweighs reason. He also cites the example of a dead land brought back to life through beneficial rain. Both phenomena are similar and prove the divine nature of the Creator’s powers."

In Surah Al-Hajj (The Pilgrimage), verse 5, God addresses humanity regarding their creation and resurrection, saying:

{O mankind! If you are in doubt about the Resurrection, We created you from dust, then from a drop of fluid, then from a clinging clot, then from a lump of flesh, formed and unformed, so that We may clarify for you. And We settle in the wombs whatever We will for an appointed term, then We bring you out as infants, then [We allow you] to reach maturity. Among you is he who is taken in death, and among you is he who is returned to the most decrepit age, so that he knows nothing after having had knowledge. And you see the earth lifeless, but when We send down water upon it, it stirs and swells and grows all kinds of delightful pairs (of vegetation).}

“The term ‘clinging clot’ has been used in the translation of this verse because this creature clings to its host’s skin and sucks its blood. This is similar to the fetus, which is attached to the placenta by its umbilical cord and derives all its sustenance from the maternal uterine wall to which the placenta is attached.

Furthermore, regarding God returning human beings to the most decrepit age so that they know nothing after having acquired some knowledge— isn’t memory loss the most striking sign of old age and the first symptom of arteriosclerosis?”

This verse demonstrates that in the 7th century, God’s messenger, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), who did not study at the Sorbonne and was completely illiterate, spoke to us through divine revelation about scientific phenomena that humanity took a long time to discover and understand.

Regarding resurrection, God mentions the story of the People of the Cave in Surah Al-Kahf (The Cave):

{So We sealed their hearing in the cave for a number of years. (11)

Then We raised them up so that We might know which of the two groups would best calculate the length of their stay. (12)}

God further states:

{And they remained in their cave for three hundred years, adding nine. (25)}

“This is the story of the People of the Cave, believed to be Byzantine princes who fled the false beliefs of their people and took refuge in a cave with their dog. God made them sleep for 309 years and sealed the cave entrance to protect them from persecution.

Through this, God aimed to show the skeptics—who believed only in the resurrection of souls and not bodies—that He was fully capable of reviving both.”

Over 14 centuries ago, through the revelation of the Quran and His messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), God informed us of phenomena that European scholars would only come to discover from the 15th century onward, after translating the works of earlier Muslim scholars.

To the skeptics, we would say that, unlike the prophets and messengers (peace be upon them) who were sent to specific peoples, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent to all of humanity, including those who had already received a divine message. Regarding this, God says in Surah Saba:

{And We have not sent you except as a bringer of good tidings and a warner to all of mankind, but most people do not know. (28)}

{And those who disbelieved said: ‘We will never believe in this Quran, nor in what came before it.’ If you could see when the wrongdoers are made to stand before their Lord, casting blame upon one another… (31)}

{…And they concealed their remorse when they saw the punishment, and We put shackles around the necks of those who disbelieved. Will they be recompensed except for what they used to do? (33)}

Dear readers, regardless of your origin or religion, I urge you to meditate on these verses, for one day, not too far from now, we will all find ourselves in this situation—except for those who believed and did good deeds in their lives.

Finally, a question for the readers: What does God mean in Surah Al-Kahf (The Cave), verse 25, by:

They remained in their cave for three hundred years, adding nine.’

What does this period of 309 years mentioned in the Quran actually represent?

In the Quran, every revelation that God provides is a blessing for humanity and a source of wisdom for those who think.”
